5 – Systems and Strategies are for Suckers

This entry might seem a bit confusing at first, as we’re using this to try and teach you about tips for slot success.

But as you’ll notice, we haven’t claimed to hold the “secret” to that success or advocated any sort of “strategy” or “system” to gain an edge on the game.

That’s because we’re realists, and as longtime slot players, we realize that our favorite game is, indeed, a pure game of chance. Unlike other casino games like blackjack and video poker, both of which incorporate the element of skill, slot machines can’t be played better by one player when compared to another.

What we mean is, you can take a mathematical genius, a 40-year gambler who knows the score, and a pure beginner and place them at three identical slot machines. And you could have these three players put in hours upon hours, or even days or years, of constant slot play. And nobody would prove capable of outplaying the other.

Sure, one will wind up winning more than his peers, and another might blow through their entire bankroll. But if you tried the same trial, again and again, those roles would reverse and alternative at random.

That’s because slot machines aren’t skill based games whatsoever. Once you pull the lever (or click the button on modern designs), the random number generator (RNG) built into the game’s computer takes over. The results you see on screen can’t be influenced in any way, shape, or form.

For all of these reasons, we advise against using any slot strategy or system that purports to guarantee success, or even give you an edge at all. They just won’t work, because they’re not capable of working as the salesperson claims.

You might hear fellow players talk about “pattern tracking,” the “vulture move,” and countless other ways of learning when a machine is prepared to pay out its jackpot. But these are myths and misconceptions, not reliable ways of winning on the slots.

When in doubt, use common sense combined with something we like to call the “quarter corollary.”

6 – Slowing the Pace Can Pay Off

We’ve all seen them before.

Frantic slot players feverishly clicking the “SPIN” button over and over again, as quickly as their fingers will allow. These players mistakenly believe in one of the slot world’s prime fallacies, which holds that jackpots are paid out based on the volume of spins put in.

By spinning the reels more often, you’re simply incurring that negative win rate at a higher frequency. Put plainly, spinning faster makes the losses pile up while slowing things down can allow you to stretch out a bankroll over time.

7 – A Machine Paying Out Doesn’t Change the Odds

Of course, as we just explained in the preceding entry, the results of any slot machine spin are completely, 100 percent random. If the odds of hitting a jackpot are 1 in 1 million for this spin, and you happen to hit the perfect combination to win it, your odds will remain exactly the same at 1 in 1 million for the next spin.

That’s because every spin of the reels represents a completely independent event. Returning to the quarter corollary, ask yourself this: if a quarter landed on heads five times in a row, what would the odds be for the sixth flip?

Of course, those odds remain fixed at 50/50. after five straight heads, or a 100, or 500.

But gamblers have a tendency to become attached to streaks and other patterns in the numbers. In fact, streaks and patterns lie at the heart of most fake slot strategies, advising players to “quit after 10 straight losers because the machine is cold” or to “get up immediately after a jackpot because that machine is tapped out for the time being.”

In reality, what has happened in the past has no bearing whatsoever on future spins. A machine could potentially pay out two straight jackpots, although that would require beating bad odds twice. Or perhaps it will go two months without paying one at all.

Once again, that’s all a factor of randomization. So if you find yourself succumbing to the temptation offered patterns and other trend lines, just remember that a quarter doesn’t remember what side it landed on, and neither do the reels.

This primer has taken a serious approach, as we attempt to teach you the true path to success on the slots.

But at their heart, slots are meant to be a source of entertainment. After all, you’ll see much more losing spins than winners, and you’ll wind up down more often not. That’s just the nature of the beast, and when you’re ready to accept those cold, hard facts, you’ll be able to enjoy the experience for what it is, fun.
